Types of Prosthetic Knees

There are many different types of prosthetic knees. Each has its own benefits, with the most appropriate knee determined by the needs of the individual. It is important to discuss your specific needs and activities with your clinician, so they can help determine which option is best for you.

Learn more about each type of technology below.

Microprocessor Knees

An onboard microprocessor automatically adjusts the response of the knee in real time based on factors like stumble detection, variation in terrain, and gait speed.

Hydraulic and Pneumatic Knees

Air or fluid is used to adapt the behavior of the knee to different walking speeds.

Basic Knees

Similar to basic and more elaborate hinge mechanisms, sliding friction is used to prevent the leg from swinging forward too fast.
