Residency Site Profile:
Scheck & Siress is one of the most respected and well-established orthotic and prosthetic practices in the greater Chicagoland area. For over 50 years, our goal has been to provide quality prosthetic and orthotic care to aid individuals in discovering and rediscovering their independence.
Comprised of over 40 ABC Certified and Illinois Licensed orthotic and prosthetic practitioners, Scheck & Siress provides residents with one-on-one attention, hands-on learning, and access to the areas leading hospitals, clinics and physicians. Based at one of our ten locations, residents will benefit from Scheck & Siress close hospital affiliations including Shriners and LaRabida Childrens Hospitals, Marianjoy Rehabilitation Center, University of Illinois (Chicago) Hospital, Rush University Medical Center, Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Ingalls Hospital, and Loyola University Medical Center.
The Scheck & Siress resident program is designed to have the resident work closely with a certified practitioner. Residents will meet with patients and collaborate with the clinician and referring physician to provide thorough and comprehensive care in orthotics or prosthetics. Our orthotic practice spans the complete scope of pathologies encountered by orthotists. We have facilities that specialize in pediatric, acute and scoliosis care, with each facility providing its own unique areas of specialization. Our prosthetic practice offers unique opportunities for residents to be exposed to both traditional and specialized care. Our affiliation with Shriners Hospital enables residents to treat complicated congenital limb deficiencies including a large PFFD population, multiple high level congenital anomalies and a large upper extremity population. Additional cases include Hip Disarticulation, Hemi-Pelvectomy, Shoulder Disarticulation and Four-Quarter amputees. Several Scheck & Siress clinicians have been cited in various publications on their experience managing these intricate amputation levels.
Residents will be involved in clinical care and decision-making, as well as educating patients and their family members on the use and care of each device. In addition, residents will work with individual practitioners who have specialized training in microprocessor controlled prostheses, VASS prosthetics, stance control orthoses, CAD-CAM technology, and pediatric orthotics and prosthetics.
Resident rotations also include a technical segment in a state-of-the-art central fabrication facility. This spacious 10,000 square foot facility can accommodate 40 technicians, has 15 vacuum forming stations, 15 modifying stations and nine laminating stations. Residents will work side-by-side with experienced technicians to learn the artisan skills of quality fabrication.
Scheck & Siress is dedicated to research and their resident research program. Scheck & Siress is the only private company to offer a research resident position; this is a six-month position that focuses on specialized research that concentrates on both orthotic and prosthetic pathologies. The research resident will assist with conducting literature reviews and collecting data on research topics being conducted by Scheck & Siress. After completing the six months of research, the resident transitions into a standard orthotic/prosthetic residency.
Scheck & Siress residents will also receive assistance from Certified and Licensed practitioners with the development and implementation of their required resident research project. Several of our certified practitioners are adjunct faculty members at Northwestern Universitys Prosthetic and Orthotic Program and thus have the experience and insight to assist the residents during this final phase of their schooling.
